IMPlementing IMProved Asthma self-management as RouTine (IMP2ART)
This is not only a NIHR-funded, UK-wide, cluster randomised trial in general practice, but an opportunity (if you are in the implementation group) to be supported to implement a guideline-recommended intervention which is being introduced into the Quality and Outcome Framework as a component of asthma reviews. There is over-whelming evidence that supported self-management for people with asthma improves control, reduces attacks and asthma deaths, and improves quality of life – the challenge is embedding self-management in routine care and that is what the implementation strategy aims to support.
The team-based strategy is designed to facilitate a practical approach to meeting the needs of patients (e.g. information resources and a range of asthma action plans); professionals (e.g. online education and skills development) and the practice (e.g. review templates, remote reviews, customised audit and feedback reports).
Practices allocated to usual care will have access to all these resources at the end of the 2-yr trial.
The trial is led by practicing primary care clinicians, and we know general practices are very busy, so we will be flexible about the timing of practice involvement – we know we have to fit around COVID-19 and delivering vaccination programmes.
The IMP2ART team would love to tell you more about the trial. If you would like to hear more please contact IMP2ART@ed.ac.uk
