RGN, BA Hons in Health and Social Care (1st class), PG Award CVD Risk, PG Cert Diabetes, PG Cert Healthcare Education, Non-Medical Prescriber
Sonia has over 4 decades of nursing and teaching experience to reflect on a varied and remarkably interesting career. Starting out as an Enrolled Nurse in the 1980’s, (today’s equivalent of Nurse Associate) Sonia has continually studied through the years, to work her way through the ranks in diverse roles within the NHS, Private sector and pharmaceutical industry, but in 2015, she took a leap of faith and left her DESMOND* National Quality Development Trainer and Assessor role and Diabetes Specialist Nurse role in the NHS to work independently. Since then, she has worked through her own limited company as a Nurse Specialist in Diabetes Management and Education.
Now considered a clinical expert in her field, Sonia speaks at national conferences and teaches as a freelance lecturer for various universities about diabetes for pre and post registration nurses. She is particularly proud to provide the Self-Management Module for the University of Warwick MSc in Diabetes Care to an online GLOBAL audience.
Sonia also remains dedicated to providing high quality care directly to patients. She does this by working on a regular basis as a locum diabetes specialist practitioner in General Practices in Rotherham and the surrounding areas. She believes this is imperative to keep her clinical sills up to date and relevant and to ensure she does not lose touch with the “real world” of primary care and the challenges this often presents. She feels it is essential to be a practicing clinician to be a credible educator and continually updates the educational programs she designs and delivers in line with national and international guidelines and research.
Sonia is delighted to say that she has worked with Julie Catchpole and the team at “Rotherham Respiratory” providing healthcare education for at least 2 decades. From the perspective of commissioning organisations, Sonia would say that it is her common sense, practical approach to simplifying complex information that makes her a more appealing “facilitator of learning” (as she prefers to call herself). She uses anonymised anecdotes and a story telling approach when sharing her clinical experience to ultimately improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of healthcare professionals of all disciplines. The main aim is to help them to provide an individualised, person-centred, compassionate and caring approach when supporting self-management, using language that is respectful, empathic and most importantly, understandable.
*DESMOND is an acronym for “Diabetes Education for the Self-Management of Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed”.
