Reporting Paediatric Spirometry (online)

Course information:
This course is aimed at anyone reporting spirometry with children and young people (CYP), however we would encourage those who are competent at performing spirometry to consider this course as it will help improve your knowledge and skills in performing, but also be able to understand what to expect when patients perform spirometry.

As with all our spirometry courses it will prepare delegates for ARTP assessment with awareness of their requirements. As an organisation we recommend a period of consolidation before undertaking the ARTP assessment. The course has been created and designed by Phil Lawrence, the Senior Respiratory Clinical Scientist at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation trust in Liverpool. Phil has over 10 years of experience and is an expert in paediatric respiratory physiology. Rotherham Respiratory are delighted to welcome Laura King as a guest tutor to this course. Laura is a Clinical Nurse specialist in Paediatric Asthma, working at Barts Health NHS Trust.

The case studies are presented as video presentations with children of varying ages used as case studies. These are anonymised traces with permission given by the subjects. Each section has interactive knowledge checks and guided learning activities which offer further learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates will understand how to:
  • Appreciate the impact that child lung development has on lung function testing
  • Understand the importance of reference values
  • Learn how to use z-scores to interpret paediatric spirometry
  • Learn a step approach to interpret spirometry results and report if its normal, obstructive, restrictive or mixed pattern
  • Understand the principles of reversibility testing and what classifies as a significant response
  • Understand the guidelines and the differences between them
