Course information:
Simply Spirometry: Advancing Care Course (online)
Our Advancing Care (online) spirometry course is unique, expertly developed and offers a way of learning that translates to clinical practice giving healthcare professionals the knowledge and confidence to perform and report spirometry. The spirometry course offers a flexible blended learning approach and will take 4 months to complete.
The content will enable learners to confidently perform and report spirometry whilst at the same time providing them the underpinning knowledge to question the diversity of guidance and practice whether reviewing evidence or peer performance.
The course will prepare delegates for portfolio assessment, throughout the course learners will collate a reflective learning log which will contain key documents, reflections and understanding required to take the ARTP assessment but will also enable the learner to appreciate the difference between numerical reporting and clinical interpretation using current, ‘real life’ anonymised case studies.
Our clinical expert who created and designed the e-learning (Chris Loveridge) has years of experience in clinical work alongside training and education. She created and will promote the ‘Seven Steps to standardised spirometry’ (Loveridge 2020). This process is utilised across all our spirometry courses to ensure any traces produced will be ‘fit for purpose’ and can be both numerically reported and clinically interpreted where there is further clinical history taking to support this. This approach will be underpinned by current evidence such as Z scores and Lower Limit of Normal (LLN) and use and discuss both ARTP 2020 guidelines and ATS/ERS 2019 standardisation document. Current respiratory disease guidelines will also be reviewed.
There will be PP video presentations for each session, with interactive knowledge checks and guided learning activities which offer advanced learning and reflection. The final assessment will consolidate the learning that has taken place and will be assessed and marked, with constructive feedback given, to enable learners to assess their own confidence to apply for the ARTP assessment where appropriate.

Learning Outcomes
- accurately performing and reporting spirometry safely and effectively in their place of work
- the evidence that underpins quality assurance in relation to spirometry equipment and how these impact on potential reporting and ongoing interpretation
- the differing evidence that underpins indications/contraindications to spirometry testing that promote patient safety and their role within protocols in their workplace
- a systematic approach to spirometry reporting/ongoing clinical interpretation and the responsibility that this entails in relation to patient centred care
