I have been involved in education to improve care for respiratory disease for over 2 decades. My background is in acute and emergency care but after gaining my Advanced Nurse Practitioner MSc in 2003 I began to work in primary care, focusing on minor illness and chronic respiratory disease. In 2009 I completed my Post-graduate Diploma in Respiratory Care with the Open University and Education for Health, working for the latter as a national and international trainer for 13 years.
I have worked at the primary/secondary care interface on respiratory improvement programmes across healthcare sectors. Working in a large general practice in the West Midlands I guided my team to achieve the PCRS-UK Respiratory Quality Award in 2013. I have worked as a facilitator for NIHR funded research projects, delivering interventions to improve emotional wellbeing and breathlessness in people with COPD (TANDEM-COPD), and, with AUKCAR, supporting primary care clinicians to help people living with asthma to develop more effective self-management skills (IMP2ART).
I am an accredited spirometry practitioner and past ARTP assessor, past member of the ARTP spirometry committee, and past co-chair of the Primary Care Respiratory Society National Conference organising committee.
I am passionate about the role of education in improving care and aim to enthuse and motivate health care professionals to see learning as continuous process, not simply a one-off certificate, and to appreciate the importance of the patient’s experience as central to improving care. I have developed, and provide ongoing student support for accredited online learning modules in COPD care and Interstitial Lung Disease for Rotherham Respiratory, and also write for nursing journals on respiratory issues. I worked on the pandemic frontline as a COVID vaccinator, and subsequently worked in Post Covid assessment clinics for 2 years. I continue to work regularly with primary care on a consultancy basis for complex respiratory patients.
My ultimate aim is to ensure correct early diagnosis of respiratory disease, enabling patients to make informed choices, manage their symptoms, and maintain a good quality of life. I believe all patients should receive good quality care provided by a properly trained and resourced health care professional.
